Urine analysis
Urine osmolality is measured to determine the concentration of chemical substances in urine. This urine analysis can be crucial for the diagnosis of various conditions, including kidney diseases, heart problems, and hormonal disorders. In Belgrade, IntroLab offers you a quick and efficient way to conduct this type of biochemical urine analysis.
What is urine osmolality?
Urine osmolality measures the concentration of particles in the urine. This concentration can be higher or lower than normal, depending on various factors, including hydration, diseases, and the use of certain medications. Urine osmolality analysis can help doctors determine if your body is properly balancing water and salts.
How is the test performed?
The test involves collecting a urine sample. To ensure the sample is not contaminated, the clean catch method is used. This method involves the use of sterile wipes and a special urine collection kit.
Preparation for urine osmolality analysis
Your doctor may advise you to limit fluid intake 12 to 14 hours before the analysis. You may also need to temporarily stop taking certain medications that can affect the results. Therefore, it is important to inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.
Interpreting the results
Normal urine osmolality values vary, but they usually range between 50 and 1200 mOsm/kg. If your value is higher than normal, it may indicate various conditions, including:
- Addison’s disease
- heart failure
- shock
On the other hand, values lower than normal may indicate conditions such as:
- diabetes insipidus
- excessive fluid intake
- kidney tubular damage
- severe pyelonephritis
Does urine osmolality analysis carry any risks?
The urine osmolality test is safe and carries no risks. It involves normal urination, so you should not experience any discomfort.
