Sodium is a crucial electrolyte that plays a vital role in maintaining normal bodily functions, including nerve and muscle activity. The 24-hour urine sodium test is an important test that helps diagnose and monitor conditions affecting sodium levels in the body. This test is available at IntroLab, one of Belgrade’s leading laboratories.
How is the test performed?
For the 24-hour urine sodium test, you need to collect urine over a 24-hour period. Your doctor will provide detailed instructions on how to do this. If you have any questions, our laboratory staff is here to help. It’s important to follow the instructions carefully to ensure accurate results.
How to prepare for the test
Your doctor may ask you to temporarily stop taking medications that could affect the test results. Be sure to inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, especially if they include:
- Corticosteroids
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Prostaglandins
- Diuretics
Never stop taking any medications without consulting your doctor.
Why measure sodium in 24-hour urine?
This test is often used to determine the cause of abnormal sodium levels in the blood. It also checks whether your kidneys are effectively removing this electrolyte from your body. Additionally, it can be used to diagnose or monitor various kidney diseases.
Normal results
For adults, normal sodium levels in urine are typically around 20 mEq/L in a random urine sample and between 40 to 220 mEq per day. Your results will vary based on your fluid and sodium intake.
What do abnormal results mean?
High sodium levels in urine may be linked to certain medications, adrenal gland dysfunction, kidney inflammation causing salt loss, or excessive dietary salt intake. Conversely, low sodium levels can indicate dehydration, diarrhea and fluid loss, heart failure, kidney issues, or liver cirrhosis.

Sample: 24-Hour Urine
Reverse time: 1 day
Preparation: Prepare a container for collecting 24-hour urine (determine if you need one or more 2-liter bottles). Discard the first morning urine (do not collect it in the container). Collect all urine throughout the day and night in the container. Add the first morning urine of the next day to the container and bring the entire amount to the laboratory for analysis. For certain tests, you may need to add a preservative to the container first – ask the laboratory for specific instructions.
