The cocaine in urine test detects recent cocaine use. This test can be performed on samples of urine, saliva, blood, hair, or sweat. It identifies the presence of cocaine or its metabolites, which are chemicals the body produces to process the substance. The two main metabolites are benzoylecgonine and ecgonine methyl ester, with IntroLab typically testing for the former.

What is Cocaine?

Cocaine is a stimulant of the central nervous system. It usually appears as a fine, crystal-like powder in the form of hydrochloride or sulfate salt and is typically “snorted” (inhaled through the nose). When mixed with sodium bicarbonate and converted into freebase form, it becomes hard chunks known as “crack,” which can be smoked. This form of the drug is currently very widespread.

What are the Symptoms of Cocaine Abuse?

The effects of cocaine start within minutes and peak around 15 to 20 minutes. These effects include dilated pupils, increased blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and body temperature. The risks associated with cocaine use vary based on the method of intake, dosage, and the individual. Some regular users report feelings of restlessness, irritability, anxiety, and insomnia. Even low doses can cause psychological issues in some people. Those who use high doses of cocaine for extended periods may become paranoid or experience cocaine psychosis, which includes tactile, visual, taste, and smell hallucinations. Cocaine has a half-life of one to two hours, while benzoylecgonine has a half-life of seven to nine hours. Benzoylecgonine can be detected in urine within two to three hours and remains detectable for two to three days after a single use.

How is the Test Performed?

A urine sample is most commonly used. The test can detect cocaine metabolites 2 to 3 days after use, and for heavy users, it can be positive up to 2 weeks after use.

Why is this Test Needed?

This test may be necessary if:

  • You have (or are applying for) a job that requires drug testing
  • You have been arrested and drug testing is part of your probation
  • You were stopped and suspected of driving under the influence of drugs

Understanding Cocaine in Urine Test Results

The results are typically reported as either positive, indicating the presence of cocaine or its metabolites, or negative, indicating no evidence of the drug was found. These results are determined based on the concentration of the substance detected in the urine.

Sample Collection

A urine sample of about 20 mL is required for the test.

Proper Storage Instructions

Keep the sample at room temperature. If it will take more than seven days to deliver the sample, refrigerate it.

Understanding Cocaine Urine Test

This biochemical urine analysis detects cocaine use. Initial testing is done with immunoassay, and positive results are confirmed by mass spectrometry (MS).
