Urine analysis
The urine creatinine test measures the amount of creatinine excreted from the body. Creatinine is a normal waste product produced daily through muscle activity and meat digestion. Healthy kidneys filter creatinine from the blood, excreting it through urine. This test is crucial for diagnosing various medical conditions and is available at IntroLab, a private laboratory in Belgrade.
Why is the Urine Creatinine Test Performed?
This biochemical urine test is primarily used to assess kidney function. It measures the creatinine clearance rate, which is the amount of creatinine the kidneys process over a specific period. High levels of creatinine in the urine may indicate diabetes, high muscle tone, or kidney problems. The test requires a urine sample, preferably taken from the first morning urine.
Preparing for the Test
Your doctor may instruct you to temporarily stop taking certain medications that could affect the test results. Be sure to inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking. This includes antibiotics such as cefoxitin or trimethoprim, and medications like cimetidine, famotidine, and ranitidine. Do not stop taking any medication without consulting your doctor first.
Test Results
Normal creatinine levels in urine are 0.8 to 1.8 g/day for men and 0.6 to 1.6 g/day for women. Results outside this range may indicate kidney dysfunction, which could be due to kidney damage, kidney disease, or other health issues affecting kidney function.
