The calcium in 24-hour urine test is used to determine the amount of calcium excreted in urine over a 24-hour period. This test is conducted by the biochemical laboratory IntroLab in Belgrade, ensuring accurate results.

What is Calcium?

Calcium is one of the most important minerals in the body, vital for maintaining bone health and the normal function of nerve and muscle cells. The 24-hour urine calcium test assesses calcium excretion through urine, providing valuable information about the body’s calcium balance.

When is Calcium in 24-Hour Urine Measured?

This test is indicated for suspected cases of osteomalacia and/or osteoporosis. Osteomalacia is characterized by the softening of bones due to a deficiency of calcium and vitamin D, while osteoporosis involves reduced bone density and an increased risk of fractures.

Additionally, this test can be useful for patients with calcium metabolism disorders, such as:

  • Hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood)
  • Hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in the blood)

The 24-hour urine calcium test can also be used for patients with kidney diseases to evaluate calcium excretion through urine.

Interpreting the Results

The results of the calcium in 24-hour urine test can be expressed in various units, such as milligrams per 24 hours (mg/24h) or micromoles per 24 hours (µmol/24h). These results can be useful in diagnosing different conditions, such as calcium metabolism disorders, kidney diseases, or osteoporosis.

Low values may be due to insufficient dietary calcium, hormonal disorders, or reduced calcium absorption in the intestines.

On the other hand, high values may indicate hypercalcemia, excessive calcium absorption, or improper calcium excretion by the kidneys.

Sample: 24 urine

Reverse time: 4h

Preparation: Prepare a container for collecting 24-hour urine (determine if one or more 2-liter bottles are needed). Discard the first morning urine sample (do not collect it in the bottle). Collect all other urine samples throughout the day and night in the bottle. On the next morning, add the first urine sample of the day to the bottle. Deliver the entire quantity of urine to the laboratory for analysis. For certain tests, a preservative needs to be added to the bottle first—ask the laboratory for specific instructions on this procedure.
