Urine analysis
The iodine in urine test measures the level of iodine in the urine. Conducted by the leading laboratory in Vračar, IntroLab, this test is a type of biochemical urine analysis.
What is Iodine?
Iodine is an essential trace element necessary for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland and the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland uses iodine from food to produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and development. This test can provide information about iodine levels in the body and identify potential imbalances.
How is the Iodine in Urine Test Conducted?
The iodine in urine test involves collecting a urine sample over a specific period, usually 24 hours. The collected sample is then brought to the laboratory for quantitative measurement of iodine levels. Results are typically expressed in micrograms per liter (μg/L) or micrograms per 24 hours (μg/24h).
Interpreting the Results
Iodine levels can vary based on several factors, including:
- Diet
- Supplementation
- Geographic location
- Health status
- Age
- Gender
Low iodine levels may indicate an iodine deficiency in the body, which can lead to thyroid dysfunction. Iodine deficiency can cause hypothyroidism, with symptoms such as fatigue, slow metabolism, weight gain, mood changes, and skin problems.
High iodine levels may result from excessive iodine intake through food or supplements. This can occur in individuals using iodine supplements or living in areas with high iodine levels in water or food. Excessive iodine levels can lead to hyperthyroidism, characterized by rapid metabolism, nervousness, weight loss, and an increased heart rate.
It is important to interpret the results of an iodine urine test in consultation with specialists, such as endocrinologists or general practitioners. They will consider other factors, such as symptoms, medical history, and results from other tests, to make an accurate diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment.

Sample: 24 urine
Reverse time: 12 days
Preparation: Prepare a container for collecting 24-hour urine (determine if one or more 2-liter bottles are needed). Discard the first morning urine sample (do not collect it in the bottle). Collect all other urine samples throughout the day and night in the bottle. On the following morning, add the first urine sample of the day to the bottle. Deliver the entire quantity of urine to the laboratory for analysis. For certain tests, a preservative needs to be added to the bottle first – consult the laboratory for specific instructions.
