Copper is an important mineral that plays a key role in the body, binding to various enzymes and participating in numerous metabolic processes. One way to assess copper concentration in the body is through a 24-hour urine copper analysis.

Why is copper in 24-hour urine analyzed?

The analysis of copper in 24-hour urine is used for diagnostic purposes, especially for diagnosing certain diseases such as Wilson’s disease, primary biliary cirrhosis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis. These disorders can lead to an accumulation of this mineral in the body, which can have negative health consequences. Fortunately, the biochemical laboratory in Belgrade, IntroLab, can help you detect the presence of copper in the urine in a timely manner and thus prevent consequences to your health.

What are the indications for collecting urine for testing?

Copper analysis is prescribed when symptoms such as jaundice, nausea, abdominal pain, changes in behavior, tremor, or other manifestations that the doctor assesses may be associated with Wilson’s disease occur. Also, in some cases, copper analysis may be recommended based on symptoms resulting from a deficiency or excess of the mineral in the body.

Interpreting results

Decreased copper values may indicate a copper deficiency. Lack of this mineral can be due to insufficient intake of foods rich in it or disorders in absorption. This can lead to various symptoms. Some of them are anemia, fatigue, muscle weakness, skin problems, or neurological problems.

Elevated copper levels in the body may indicate:

  • Wilson’s disease
  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Copper poisoning

Of course, to properly interpret the results, it is necessary to consult a doctor. They will diagnose and prescribe appropriate therapy based on these and other factors.

Sample: 24h urine

Reverse time: Up to 10 days

Preparation: Prepare a bottle for collecting 24-hour urine (determine whether one or more 2-liter bottles are needed). Discard the first morning urine portion (do not pour it into the bottle). Collect all other urine portions during the day and night in the bottle. Add the first morning portion of the following day to the bottle and deliver the entire amount of urine to the laboratory for analysis. For certain analyses, it is necessary to first pour a preservative into the bottle – ask in the laboratory for the procedure.
