Urine analysis
The analysis of aluminum in urine is a test used to assess aluminum toxicity. Aluminum is a metal found in large quantities in our environment. We are all exposed to small amounts of this metal through air, food, water, and soil. It is also found in paints, cookware, deodorants, and medications such as antacids, anti-diarrhea medications, and ulcer medications. This urine analysis can be performed at IntroLab. We are known as a biochemical laboratory in Belgrade, and we are distinguished by our courteous and efficient staff.
Why is the analysis performed?
The analysis of aluminum in urine is most often performed for the following reasons:
- To monitor exposure to aluminum
- To monitor metal implants
Your doctor may order this test if they notice certain symptoms indicating aluminum intoxication. These symptoms include:
- Seizures
- Slow growth in children
- Confusion
- Muscle weakness
- Bone pains and deformities
- Speech problems
However, a blood test provides more accurate results for aluminum levels in the body, so the urine test is not recommended for routine screening.
How to prepare for the aluminum urine analysis?
No special preparation is required for this test. Inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking, as well as any dietary supplements, as some of them may contain this metal and affect the outcome of this biochemical urine analysis. In addition, your doctor may instruct you to stop taking certain medications before the test. If you have received a contrast agent containing gadolinium or iodine, wait at least 96 hours before collecting a urine sample, as they can also affect the results. These agents are usually given to patients before X-ray imaging or CT scans.
How is the analysis performed?
The aluminum in urine test is performed on a urine sample collected over a 24-hour period. Your doctor or nurse will explain the procedure and tell you when to start collecting urine.
Collecting urine is a very safe procedure and involves no risks. However, the test results can be affected by certain factors, such as:
- Not keeping the urine in a cool place
- Not collecting all urine portions throughout the day
- Collecting urine outside the specified period
Results of the aluminum urine analysis
Normal levels of aluminum in a 24-hour urine test are less than 10 mcg/24 h (micrograms per 24 hours). If your results are below this value, it indicates that aluminum exposure is within safe limits. If you excrete more than 10 mcg of aluminum in 24 hours, it is an indicator of excessive exposure to this metal.
It is important to note that people who are on chelation therapy for iron or aluminum toxicity excrete more aluminum in the urine. Similarly, those who have metal-based prostheses have a higher concentration of this metal in their urine.
Depending on your results, your doctor may order additional tests to confirm aluminum intoxication. They may also advise you on how to limit exposure through diet and other sources.
The aluminum urine analysis is an important test that can help diagnose various conditions. If you have questions about it, contact IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade. Our expert team is here to provide you with all the necessary information and support.
