17-OH-corticosteroids are metabolic products of cortisol and other adrenocorticotropic hormones (ACTH). This type of biochemical urine analysis is used to assess the function of the adrenal glands and the pituitary gland. Our laboratory in Vračar, IntroLab, provides an analysis of 17-OH-corticosteroids in urine, allowing you to obtain results that help you maintain your health.

What are 17-OH-corticosteroids?

17-OH-corticosteroids are a group of substances formed during the breakdown of cortisol and other adrenocorticotropic hormones. These hormones include aldosterone, cortisol, and sex hormones. After they are broken down, 17-OH-corticosteroids are excreted from the body through urine.

Why is the analysis of 17-OH-corticosteroids in urine important?

This urine analysis is important because it can help diagnose various medical conditions. Elevated levels of 17-OH-corticosteroids may indicate problems with the adrenal glands, such as Cushing’s syndrome, or the presence of adrenal gland tumors, pituitary tumors, and other ectopic tumors that produce 17-OH-corticosteroids. On the other hand, decreased levels may indicate Addison’s disease, pituitary hypofunction (hypopituitarism), or surgical removal of the adrenal gland.

How to prepare for the analysis?

For the analysis of 17-OH-corticosteroids, it is necessary to collect urine over 24 hours. There are no special preparations before the test, but it is recommended to consume a sufficient amount of fluids before the test.

Interpreting results

The results of the 17-OH-corticosteroid urine analysis are interpreted based on reference values, and from these, it is determined whether the levels of these substances are possibly decreased or elevated. Normal values are 2-7 mg/24h.

Your doctor will interpret the results in the context of your symptoms, medical history, and other tests. If you have questions about the results, do not hesitate to consult with your doctor, or the staff at our laboratory. We are available when it comes to the analysis of 17-OH-corticosteroids in urine, and we are also here for other laboratory analyses.

Vrsta uzorka i vreme kada se uzima uzorak

Sample: 24h urine

Reverse time: Up to 8 days

Preparation: Prepare a bottle for collecting 24-hour urine (determine whether one or more 2-liter bottles are needed). Discard the first morning urine portion (do not pour it into the bottle). Collect all other urine portions during the day and night in the bottle. Add the first morning portion of the next day to the bottle and deliver the entire amount of urine to the laboratory for analysis. For certain analyses, it is necessary to first pour a preservative into the bottle – ask in the laboratory about the procedure.
